It is one of the more notorious of the Hawke’s Bay ‘ten owners’ blocks. The main claimant for the block was the Hawke’s Bay rangatira Karaitiana Takamoana, who had earlier formed part of a group of chiefs who had leased the land to a consortium of Pākehā runholders led by Thomas Tanner.
