When a vacancy in the committee remains unfilled following an annual general meeting or special general meeting (SGM), any shareholder can apply to appoint a new member.
In August 2020, the Government passed targeted
changes to Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 to simplify
the legal processes for owning, occupying and using
Māori land.
Generally, members have a three-year term and can stand for re-election at the incorporation’s annual general meeting (AGM). Māori incorporations are governed by the Māori Incorporations Constitution Regulations 1994 and run independently of the normal court processes that apply to trusts, but do provide annual reports to the Court.
Approximately 58 per cent of Māori land is currently held by governance entities provided for under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993. The Māori Land Court receives on average 1,600 applications per year in relation to the establishment and management of trusts and incorporations.
