As a court of record, we are responsible for the accurate documentation of the succession and management of Māori land. The legislation that enables us to perform this role is Te TureWhenuaMāoriAct1993, which recognises the importance of Māori land as taonga-tuku-iho – of special significance to Māori passed down through generations.
This practice note applies to the appointment, engagement and payment of the fees of
any lawyer1 per ss 70(3), 98(3) and 98(9)(c) of Te TureWhenuaMāoriAct1993 (Act) out
of the Māori Land Court Special Aid Fund (Special Aid Fund).
