She also acted as legal counsel for Treaty claimants and Māori land clients. She holds a LLM from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, and in 2023 received her PhD at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi for her thesis "Ko te mana te utu: Narratives of sovereignty, law, and tribal citizenship in the Pōtikirua ki te Toka-a-Taiau District".
Approximately 58 per cent of Māori land is currently held by governance entities provided for under TeTureWhenua Māori Act 1993. The Māori Land Court receives on average 1,600 applications per year in relation to the establishment and management of trusts and incorporations.
Once satisfied, the Māori Land Court may make a recommendation to the Minister of Transport for the roadway to be declared a public road and handed over to the local authority for ongoing maintenance.
If a water service provider asks for the landowner’s permission to enter the whenua and there is a disagreement, the provider and landowners go through an internal review process try and find a solution.
I am very conscious from personal experience of the potential difficulties in forming a whānau trust. I have experienced those difficulties notwithstanding the fact that I was a practising lawyer and familiar with the workings of TeTureWhenua Māori Act.
