The Māori Land Court operates under the provisions of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (referred to as ‘the Act’ throughout this booklet).

Many urupā are traditional burial grounds, and are the places where whānau and hapū members expect to be buried when their time comes.

For example, for an application for succession, you’ll need a death certificate, any grant of administration (grant of probate2 or letters of administration3) or the original will, minutes of a whānau meeting if a whānau trust is required, and consents of the proposed trustees.

Just before I wind up, I want to make a few brief comments about the Court and the Tribunal. For Te Kooti Whenua Māori this is a time of uncertainty. We await confirmation of the details and programme for the Government’s review of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act, and so now is not the time for comment from the judiciary.
