Examples of what could be considered ‘simple’ trust matters
include:
• forming a whānautrust for a single owner’s interests or
shares; or
• terminating a kaitiakitrust for a minor when the person
reaches 20 years of age; or
• appointing a trustee to a whānautrust.
Iwi and hapū are therefore unable to fulfil their obligations as kaitiaki (cultural guardians)
towards their taonga – yet these kaitiaki obligations are central to the survival of Māori culture.
