I am currently the judge for Te Waipounamu in the Māori Land Court. I am also presiding over a number of urgent inquiries in the Waitangi Tribunal, which has never been busier.
The Minister of Māori Development has sought expressions of interest for the next Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, and will in due course announce the appointment of the next Chief Judge and Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal. The former Chief Judge continues to be presiding officer of the Waitangi Tribunal over those inquiries that have been already heard or part-heard by him.
Only 17% of Māori knew how to speak te reo, only 5% of our children in schools could speak te reo, and furthermore, there were people of that time who declared there was no benefit in teaching te reo and no benefit in the continued survival of te reo Māori.
