Under s 23 of the 1865 Act the Court could vest blocks of land in tribes, but only if the block was larger than 5,000 acres.

In 2017 an article in Te Karaka , Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu’s on-line magazine, noted: While work is almost complete on identifying successors for the Hāwea-Wānaka block, minimal mahi has been done for the Toitoi block and almost nothing for the remaining two blocks.
S Overall, an average Māori land block has a size of 53.06ha and 114 owners. S The total number of allocated ownership records recorded in all blocks is 3,287,810.

My marae are Muru Raupatu at Bell Block and Waikawa Marae near Picton. My tipuna were part of the diaspora of Taranaki Māori in the 19th century, finally settling on Aropaoa Island in Queen Charlotte Sound.
So it was not uncommon on this project to have a block with an appellation such as this: Waerenga East No 2 B, Waerenga East No 1, Section 7 block 5 Rotoiti Survey District, Maungaroa Kaharoa No 12 block (Amalgamated) Lot C.
Māori incorporations are designed to manage whole blocks of land and are the most commercial of all Māori land management structures.
