In 1894 the
Court was given jurisdiction to grant probate
and letters of administration with respect to
Māori people. The Court lost this jurisdiction
in 1967.
Where the title to the land is held directly by the owners (i.e. there is no administration
structure in place) the owners have to apply to the Registrar for a certificate of
confirmation per s 160 of the Act.
Proposition 2: All Māori land should be capable of utilisation and effective
administration
The report recommends that the Act be amended to provide for a new category of
governor of Māori land known as an “external manager or administrator”.
