Since the passing of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, our role is to:
promote the retention ofMāorilandinthe hands of its owners, whānau and hapū
facilitate the occupation, development and use ofMāoriland
ensure that decisions made about Māoriland are fair and balanced taking into account the needs of all the owners and their beneficiaries.
In 1993, the Te Ture Whenua Māori Act was introduced with the purpose of preventing the loss of any more Māoriland – which currently makes up approximately 6% of all landin Aotearoa New Zealand.
