Māori land can be used to secure finance or a mortgage just like any other interest in land.
That provides a great deal of protection because the land cannot be sold or gifted away. Nor can the land be taken by way of an agreement under the Public Works Act 1981.

7.3 If, after the constitution of this Trust, any additional Māori land interests are vested in the
name of any person who has vested Māori land interests into this Trust, those additional
interests shall be included as Trust Property of this Trust by application to the Court by
the Registrar without notice to the Beneficiaries.
To terminate a trust, you will need support from majority of the beneficiaries. In your application you’ll need to provide:
written consents of the trustees
written consents of the beneficiaries
evidence of a properly notified meeting(s) held to terminate the trust, and
a schedule of land to be removed from the trust and to who those shares will be transferred
