  In some cases, the Māori Trustee can also be appointed as an agent to work on specific matters with, or on behalf of, trusts and trustees.

The order will then be written up in the Court title records if it affects land, and will be sent to any party who has to act on it, for example the Māori trustee if the Māori trustee has been ordered to pay money he/she is holding, or a Māori incorporation if the order affects shares in that incorporation.

A person bound to deal with property on behalf of the owners or beneficiaries. The trustee becomes the legal owner when the order appointing them as trustee for the land is registered against the title.

However, it is possible to make application to the Court to have an area excluded from a reservation pursuant to section 338(5), and then to set up an ahu whenua trust in relation to the excluded area with the object of allowing housing development to take place. Trustees could then be appointed to administer it, and they would be able to grant leases or licences for the necessary term.
