Trust applications are decided by a Māori Land Court judge.
The former ChiefJudge, Judge Isaac, retired from his role on 30 April, and accordingly Deputy ChiefJudge Fox and Deputy Chairperson Judge Reeves have taken up the roles of Acting ChiefJudge and Acting Chairperson respectively.
While the Māori Land Court provides an essential service, the majority of its proceedings were not priority proceedings during Alert Level 4. On 23 March 2020, ChiefJudge Isaac released a protocol advising that all scheduled Māori Land Court hearings and other events would be adjourned, to be rescheduled once we ceased to be at Level 4. 2 Any applications for urgent injunctive or other relief filed with the Court during this period were directed to the ChiefJudge...
She was also appointed as an Alternate Environment Court Judge in 2009. ChiefJudge Fox was appointed as the Deputy ChiefJudge of the Māori Land Court in 2010, and as the ChiefJudge of the Court in 2023.
