No formal appellate body was set up
until the establishment of the Native Appellate
Court in 1894. This Court, today the Māori
Appellate Court, was established to hear appeals
from the Native Land Court.
As the central, freely accessible portal for
judicial decisions, JDO enables users to conduct
comprehensive searches across all courts, includ-
ing te ao Māori terminology. For instance, a search
for ‘wāhi tapu’ will return relevant decisions from
the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court,
Employment Court, Environment Court, and the
Māori Land Court.
The Chief Justice notes Chief Judge Fox’s long and exemplary service to the
Court. Chief Judge Fox was appointed as Māori Land Court Judge in 2000, and
as Deputy Chief Judge in 2010.
