Currently Aotearoa New Zealand has 11 women judges of Māori ancestry who serve on the High Court, District Court and Māori Land Court. That figure represents about 4.8% of the judiciary.

It is a formal occasion, and you will need to address the judge as ‘Your Honour’ or ‘Judge’. The kōrero during a court hearing forms the court minute. To make sure that the minute is accurate, court hearings are recorded.

Training for trustees Training for trustees is a significant issue for the Court. In many instances the Court must choose between appointing inexperienced trustees to manage land or making no appointments at all.

And so ends my words of encouragement to all branches of our justice system, to search for the pathway that is best suited for your Court. Let us not be the reason for the efforts of those who formed the crowd of combat, the nation of contention, the realm of revitalisation, of those who had fortitude, who preserved, who were patient and tolerant, those who gave us a breath of life, let us not be the reason for their efforts to be swept away like dust.
