In order to
preserve the kin groups, the Act restricts the type of people
to whom land can be sold or gifted. These people can be:
• the owner’s children or direct descendants
• any whanaunga of the owner who, in accordance with
tikanga Māori9, are associated with the land
• the other beneficial owners10 of shares in the same land
who are members of the hapū associated with that land
• the trustees for any of the people referred to above
• anyon...
Prior to its integration into the Department for Courts
and Ministry of Justice, the Māori Land Court was
part of a section within the Department of Māori
Affairs (often referred to as the court section).
If you are interested in, or affected by, one of these applications and wish to make submissions or
provide evidence concerning the application, you must notify the Registrar in writing by 4 pm on the 1st of
September 2023 providing your name and address, telephone number, and email address (if any), and
setting out your connection to the application and brief details of your concerns.
