The date of the swearing in ceremony will be confirmed in due course and once sworn in she will be based in Wellington. The Honourable Willie Jackson, Minister for Māori Development made a formal announcement on 22 March 2023: New appointment to Māori Land Court bench | Beehive.govt.nz My congratulations, and congratulations on behalf of the Māori Land Court, to Judge Thomas.
She holds a LLM from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, and in 2023 received her PhD at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi for her thesis "Ko te mana te utu: Narratives of sovereignty, law, and tribal citizenship in the Pōtikirua ki te Toka-a-Taiau District".
Judge Coxhead will continue to sit as a resident judge in Waiariki, with time spent in Wellington Chambers where required. There will be an acknowledgement of Judge Coxhead’s appointment as Deputy Chief Judge and details will be confirmed in due course.
