1 Māori Land Update – Ngā Āhuatanga o te whenua May 2023 | Haratua 2023 This update is issued by the Office of the Chief Registrar, Māori Land Court | Te Kooti Whenua Māori as part of the ongoing efforts to help inform and assist owners, organisations and government agencies about the characteristics of Māori Customary and Māori Freehold Land.

You can combine Māori land, general land, or both, regardless of size, shape, location, or status.
A mortgage or loan may be acquired by: the sole owner of a Māori land block all the owners of a Māori land block acting together the trustees of a Māori land block who are empowered to raise finance against the block, or a Māori Incorporation which holds Māori land.
Access to Māori land was generally considered when the title of the land was originally issued and in many cases: a roadway would have been created to give access to the land there may have already been a public or private roadway servicing the land, or a right of way to access land, across a neighbouring property, may have been put in place.
Toitū te Whenua Land Information New Zealand Toitū te Whenua hold information about historical transfers, surveying titles, or land that has been converted to general land.
Māori land trusts Māori land trusts are used to manage whenua owned by multiple people.
There are many ways Māori connect with and utilise whenua, depending on the economic, social, and cultural aspirations of the whānau for the whenua. The Māori Land Court, alongside our partner agencies, are here to support you and your whānau throughout your whenua journey.
Chief Judge Fox was appointed as Māori Land Court Judge in 2000, and as Deputy Chief Judge in 2010.
