Judges Savage and Harvey
On 24 February 2023, the Māori LandCourt
held a special sitting in Waiariki to recognise the
retirement of his Honour Judge Patrick Savage
from the Māori LandCourt, and the departure of
the Honourable Justice Dr Layne Harvey from the
Māori LandCourt to the High Court bench.
Welcome to the year that was for the Māori LandCourt. And what a busy year it was.
The judges have been working with the staff
of the seven Māori LandCourt registries to move
through the backlog of cases before the Court.
It is the Native
LandCourt (it became the ‘Māori’ LandCourt in
1947) which has been a constant factor, and it is
the Court which gives the subject of Māori land
law its coherence and thematic unity.
