If you apply to occupy your land, you’ll need to have a conversation about your plans with as many of the other landowners as possible. For these discussions, you should have a sketch plan of where you want to occupy or build, a calculation of how much land you'll need, and information about how your occupation or building could benefit the other owners.

Succession with no living descendants When a landowner passes away and they have no children or mokopuna, other members of their whānau will succeed to their whenua.

Alienation of interests proceeded very rapidly, purchased by land speculators and land brokers such as Frederick Sutton, R D Maney, J H Coleman and others. Crown officials and others became concerned about this rapid loss of land.

Whenua tōpū trusts are designed: to receive former public works land or other community properties that could be used for Māori community use, or for the benefit of local hapū or iwi and descendants of the original landowners.

If one owner dies, the other joint tenant(s) automatically succeed to the interest that the deceased joint tenant held.

By creating a free, culturally appropriate and safe process outside of a court sitting, landowners and other Court users can kōrero and wānanga about the dispute privately and come up with their own workable solutions.

To stop or close an existing roadway, written consent must be obtained from: the Minister of Transport, and the local council. Landowners or representatives of the New Zealand Transport Agency or local council can apply for the returned ownership of a closed or stopped road to the original landowners.
