Pātaka Whenua, the Māori Land Court’s new online portal, launched in June 2023. In Pātaka Whenua, landowners can find information about their whenua, search the court record, and apply to the court directly online.
Once an order is granted by the Court, the trust continues until the landowners, beneficiaries, trustees, and the Court agree to end it.
The process to do this is different from other Māori Land Court application processes. Landowners and other interested parties, if appropriate, should hold a meeting to decide to set aside land as a Māori reservation.

If one owner dies, the other joint tenant(s) automatically succeed to the interest that the deceased joint tenant held.

For some applications, landowners will need to notify other owners of their application to the Court ahead of time so they can attend hui, support the application, make a payment offer, or object to the application.
