After Part 4 searches had been carried out at the Māori Land Court I learnt that in 1967 an uncle of mine had appeared at the Māori Land Court and had succeeded to some interests in the name of his mother and father (my grandparents).
Trustees are appointed by the Māori Land Court under the jurisdiction set out in s 222 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993.

They will also be able to vote on whether they want to receive the land back as Māori or General land, and how that land will be held.
