Former land owners become shareholders in the Incorporation rather than owners in the land. Māori incorporations are designed to manage whole blocks of land and are the most commercial of all Māori land management structures.

LAND BLOCK Any land that has its own title: • Māori Customary Land • Māori Freehold Land • General Land held by Māori • General Land • Crown Land • Crown Land reserved for Māori LAND LOCKED BLOCK Block of land that does not have any legal access.

The Tangata Whenua map shows tangata whenua-owned lands (ahuwhenua blocks) as well as marae and gazetted rohe moana that border the shoreline.
Another important type of case was a partition, or the division of a Māori land block into smaller sections. Most Māori land blocks have been repeatedly partitioned and repartitioned since the original investigation of title.

The court record holds information about current and historic ownership of Māori land, including block and trust information, minutes, and orders.
GIS maps exist which confirm the location of the blocks.
You can find information about your whenua and other Māori land from a variety of sources.
It must be maintained by the owners and beneficiaries and use of the road may be restricted to the owners of the roadway block, the owners of any blocks of land serviced by the roadway, or a combination of both.
