Te Ture Whenua Māori Act provides legal definitions for different types of Māori land ownership.
As I said earlier, one of the major difficulties for Māori owners setting up governance structures and improving the utilisation of land in multiple ownership is the inability to contact or give notice to other owners of proposals for development.

You can search for whenua that you have an interest in to learn more about the whakapapa of the whenua and the whānau. You can find information on:
the current list of landowners of the block
when a person became a landowner, who they inherited whenua interests from and the type of land ownership they have
the previous landowners and line of succession, or whakapapa of the whenua.
You can search to find trusts, incorporations, Māori reservations as well as other types, and will
be able to find information on:
• the overview of the organisation’s management structure,
• members of the management structure,
• ownership details,
• contact details for the administrator (if available).
