The trustees want to get in touch with every owner so they can update their contact details.
This brought the Māori Land Court record into the computer age with details of Māori land blocks and their owners being accessible nationwide, without owners having to travel to the Māori Land Court where the land was located to get information.
But, it is my experience that not all owners will participate even with notice. It is not uncommon for a block of 100-200 owners, for meetings to attract less than 10 owners – and that is on a good day.
The intended amendments are designed to provide a strong platform for Māori land owners, to give Māori land owners more autonomy and, if they so choose, support to realise the economic potential of their land.
