The Crown purchase agents had promised that Ngāi Tahu would be left with ‘ample reserves’ to live on.
That was not the case and Māori in the South Island were left without land and without sufficient resources to take care of themselves and their whānau.
But we have come to a time now where we must all take action; we must continue with the efforts for the survival of our language. Perhaps it is the case that those of us who are gathered here in this house today are the fortunate ones, the ones who are unyielding in the pursuit of the sustenance provided by the word.
