A Māori reservation is a special type of trust that sets aside land (Māori or general land) for community purposes, such as:
Marae (where a Charter must be in place)
Urupā
Wāhi tapu
Papakāinga
Kaumātua housing
A spring, well, or other water reserve
Catchment areas or other source of a water supply...
This is the case for the largest
and most successful trusts and incorporations, such as the Tuaropaki Trust and
Mangatu Incorporation, right down to the smallest papakainga trusts. Not only have
trusts and incorporations functioned under the Act, many have flourished, completely
transforming their land and financial circumstances.
