The special bond between Māori people and the land is recognised by the Māori Land Court, and the records held by this Court form an invaluable part of the whakapapa of all Māori. The Māori Land Court operates under the provisions of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (referred to as ‘the Act’ throughout this booklet).

Under the of the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988 , trustees can also be removed if they are no longer capable of carrying out their duties and: are subject to an order appointing a manager under section 31, or are a trustee corporation managing the trustee's property under section 32 or 33.

A licence to occupy gives you permission to build on or occupy whenua.
