TITLE IMPROVEMENT
Te Kooti WhenuaMāori – MāoriLand Court
For more information, go to maorilandcourt.govt.nz
Te Kooti WhenuaMāori – MāoriLand Court (MLC) is the
New Zealand Court that hears matters relating to Māoriland.
If the borrower defaults the lender is entitled to remove the house from the land. Currently Housing New Zealand provides financing along similar lines through the kāinga whenua scheme.
The MāoriLand Court’s role is to identify all successors and their relative beneficial interests by identifying all persons entitled to succeed to the interest of an original beneficiary in SILNA lands: (a) As though the land was Māori freehold land; and (b) As though the deceased person died intestate (applying the principles of s 109 of Te Ture WhenuaMāori Act 1993 (TTWMA)).
