The MLC operates under the provisions of Te Ture Whenua
Māori Act 1993 (‘the Act’).
Important changes to the rules governing Māori
incorporations were brought about by the Act and the
Māori Incorporations Constitution Regulations 1994 (‘the
Regulations’).
As a court of record, the Māori Land Court is
responsible for ensuring the accurate documenta-
tion of Māori land succession and management.
Its work is guided by the Te Ture Whenua Māori
Act 1993, which recognises Māori land as taonga
tuku iho – a precious heritage and treasure passed
down through generations.
