Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, the Crown negotiated several largescale purchases of land in Te Waipounamu (the South Island) whereby almost the entire land base of Ngāi Tahu, some 34.5 million acres of land, was sold for £14,750. 1 Ngāi Tahu’s landlessness was the subject of several Crown investigations in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
It has required hundreds of hours of human resource time, with a large percentage of that time derived from the Maori Land Court judges.

Use this form when exchanging some or all of your interests in Māori Land by sale or gift with some or all of the Māori Land interests of a different owner in a different block of Māori Land.
This type of trust is also used for receiving Crown land as part of any settlement.
