People entitled to receive Māori land shares
or interests
Māori land shares can only be sold or gifted to certain people
who belong to a group defined in the Act as the preferred
classes of alienees.
This new initiative provides a visual tool to Māori land owners and users of Māori landto access information to assist in the utilisation and development of their land.

How are mortgages registered against whenua Māori?
14. Where the title to the land is held by a Māori land trust or a Māori Incorporation, the
mortgage has to be sent to the Māori Land Court’s Registrar for noting (ss 150A and
150B of the Act).
As a result, from time to time the Māori Land Court receives applications to extend existing urupā, or to set aside Māori freehold land, or sometimes General land owned by Māori, as new urupā reservations.
