MĀORI LAND TRUSTS
CUSTODIAN TRUSTEES
Custodian trustees are responsible for:
• gathering together and holding the assets of the trust
• investing funds
• disposing of assets
• signing documents as directed by the responsible
trustees.
It takes its name from the place in the
Bay of Islands where it was first signed, on 6 February 1840. This day is now a public holiday in New
Zealand.
The Treaty is a broad statement of principles on which the British and Māori made a political compact
to found a nation state and build a government in New Zealand.
On the discretion to appoint trustees, that Court stated that ordinarily the Māori Land Court would give substantial weight to the views of the owners. In summary, key points that emerge from this decision in the context of appointment of trustees are:
