Fenton was from time to time entrusted with
special duties and responsibilities by the
government. He was, for example, given the
responsibility of carrying out some important
negotiations with Ngāti Whakaue and other
Arawa tribes at Rotorua in 1880.
Māori bodies in addition to Te
Tumu Paeroa (the Māori Trustee), such as Post Settlement Governance Entities and
Māori trusts and incorporations, will be eligible to undertake the role.
Trustees1 are bound by Te Ture Whenua Māori Act and the
Trusts Act 2019. Both Acts set out duties and responsibilities
of trustees.2 A trustee’s key role is to maximise the assets and
minimise the liabilities of the trust to the best of their ability
and within the law.
