may not necessarily be listed in this publication.
Experience tells us that the
assembled owners’ provisions can be suitable for confirming sales or leases of land,
but are good for little else. They certainly do not promote improved governance –
they were introduced by the NativeLandAct 1909 which was not concerned with
promoting Māori governance of their land.
The legislation which enables us to perform our role is Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993. The Act recognises
the importance of whenua Māori as taonga-tuku-iho - of special significance to Māori passed down through
generations.
