Much has been achieved by the project for Māori land owners, their whanau and hapu by giving greater certainty to title issues. The project has proven, simply by the volume of work completed and by the number of title anomalies uncovered, that both title systems were in a parlous and unsatisfactory state.
So we are dealing with multiple owners averaging 85 owners per title – the lowest 10% averaging 1 owner to each title, and the highest 10%, averaging 629 owners in each title.
Leasehold title: A land title giving the person(s) listed a limited set of rights in the land
in question (such as a right to occupy or utilise the land) for a fixed period of time.
