Prior to joining the Ministry of Justice she held a number of leadership and management positions with Careers New Zealand, covering similar regions and including Taranaki. Claire joined the Māori Land Court in 2017 and brings extensive leadership knowledge and experience to her current position as Pae Ārahi o Te Rito.

In the late 1850s, this so-called ‘pre-emption’
system of exclusive Crown purchasing
disintegrated, partly as a result of the disastrous
purchase of the Waitara block in 1859, which
led to the outbreak of war in Taranaki. There
was a complicated search for alternatives from
around 1859-1862.
