On Friday 29 November, the old Māori Land Court on Lowe Street Gisborne was closed, and the new court opened on Gladstone Road. A crowd of approximately 100 people gathered to witness this transition through the blessing and official opening by Sir Derek Lardelli and his team of kaikarakia of Te Rā Tū, the new Tairāwhiti Māori Land Court.

The major ownership of the land (which has an area of 1.4011 ha situated in Whittaker Road, Rotorua) has been held since 1968 in a long-term testamentary trust for eight of the testator’s children and their descendants.

From 6 February 2021 The Māori Land Court can make rulings about Māori land under the Family Protection Act 1955, Law Reform (Testamentary Promises) Act 1949, Government Roading Powers Act 1989, Local Government Act 1974 and the Property Law Act 2007.
