An engaged owner is said to be “an
owner who has actively demonstrated their commitment to the ownership interest by
exercising a vote either in person or by proxy or nominee.”
The Court gives the Trustees control of the Trust Property so that the Trustees can deal
with the Trust Property, for the benefit of the Beneficiaries.
The huruhuru can be
attributed to the resources, services and technol-
ogy we implement to ensure that the manu or,
in this case, te reo Māori can flourish within our
Courts.
We wish to acknowledge those who sup-
ported the idea from its inception, to Greg Shaw
from Te Tumu Paeroa who was able to join us
on the morning as a representative for the Māori
Trustee, Dr Charlotte Severne, to the managers at
Te Puni Kōkiri, and specifically Paula Rāwiri who
attended as the representative for Dave Samuels,
the Secretary of Māori Development, and of
course, to the Pae Matua of the Māori Land Court
Steve Gunson, a huge mihi to you all.

Māori land trusts
Māori land trusts are used to manage whenua owned by multiple people. Because Māori land can have so many owners, creating a trust can be an efficient way to make decisions about the whenua.
For the Māori Land Court, our focus is on being able to progress the successions as quickly as we can in order to update the lists of successors so that meetings of successors can be called.
