This speech will be about my role as a Judge of the Māori Land Court. However, because I became a Judge only a matter of weeks ago, I do not yet have many stories to share with you about my new job.
The Heretaunga block created a national scandal, as it was seen as an example of how a ‘land ring’ could acquire large areas of land to the detriment of small settlers.

For Māori, good leadership depended upon how well those leaders responded to their people and how well they were able to protect them and their whenua (lands).

In 2017, an application was made to the Māori Land Court to determine the status of the land, the ownership of the land and the relative interests of the owners.
They will also be able to vote on whether they want to receive the land back as Māori or General land, and how that land will be held.
If an owner with Māori Land interests is deceased, and a succession has not previously been dealt with by the Court or a Registrar, you can use this form to seek a determination from the Court as to those persons entitled to a deceased’s Māori Land interests and an order transferring the interests to those entitled.

Land interests remained in the name of my grandfather and my great-grandmother.

It gives an inaccurate impression of how the Act operates and fails to explain in any reasoned way how the Act inhibits (or enhances) Māori land owners’ aspirations.
