Māori Land Update –
Ngā Āhuatanga o te whenua

This update is issued by the Office of the Chief Registrar, Māori Land Court | Te Kooti Whenua Māori
to provide key statistics on Māori land, including the number and total area of Māori Customary Land
(MCL) and Māori Freehold Land (MFL) blocks, and how many of these are managed by trusts or
incorporations versus those that are not.
In
such cases form 13 should be completed.
HOW TO FILE AND COMPLETE THIS APPLICATION FORM
(i) This form must be accompanied with the
appropriate application fee and be filed with the
Registrar in the District in which the provisional or
preliminary determination of the Court was made;
(ii) Please ensure that all information required on the
form is completed;

The former Chief Judge, Judge Isaac, retired from his role on 30 April, and accordingly Deputy Chief Judge Fox and Deputy Chairperson Judge Reeves have taken up the roles of Acting Chief Judge and Acting Chairperson respectively.
The whānau trust AGMs follow the ahu whenua trust AGM i.e. they choose their representative away from the ahu whenua trust meeting, after hearing how it is being administered. The exception, of course, is the election of their representative on the ahu whenua trust before its inaugural AGM.
This service is not available for matters relating to sections 26B, 26C, 26P, 26Q or
30(1) of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993.
HOW TO FILE AND COMPLETE THIS APPLICATION FORM
There is no fee for this type of application.
Previously, leases and occupation licenses could only be
issued up to 14 years, a timeframe that made it difficult to
get finance to build on Māori reservation land.
The Court may prevent trespass or injury
to Māori land, prohibit dealings with property in proceedings, or require restoration — but is not limited to these
grounds.

(i) This form must be accompanied with the appropriate application fee and may be filed at any office of the Court;
(ii) If the order sought is against one or more other parties you must supply the names and contact details of those
parties;
