Ifyou have a current application in the Māori Land Court that is being delayed by a dispute, you can ask for your application to be put on hold while you attempt to settle the dispute outside of court.
So, my advice is to follow your passion. You never know where it will take you. If someone had told me back when Boys II Men were number 1 that I would eventually become a Judge of the Maori Land Court, I would have laughed at them and told them to go to the “End of the Road” (or words to that effect).
Before applying to the Māori Land Court for an occupation
order, you will need consent from the other owners of the
land, and if applicable, from trustees or the management
committee of the Māori incorporation over the land.
The intention of setting aside a papakāinga reservation is to provide housing near the marae, particularly for kaumātua and their families, to keep the marae as a living, vibrant centre of the community. But, ifyou cannot mortgage or charge a reservation there may be great difficulty in raising the capital needed to build papakāinga housing.
