There is a myth that seems to be reborn about every 20 years that there is a large pool of unused or under-used Māori freehold land out there that could be made markedly more productive. In my experience this land does not exist!
In simple terms this means that the boundaries and areas of Māori land are now clearly marked, identified and registered as a certificate of title.
In my second year I was into law school and my classmates included Annette Sykes, John Tamihere, Mark Milroy, Paul Majurey and Frances Eivers. Ahead of us were Denise Clark, Prue Kapua, Louis Bidois, Sharon Opai and Charl Hirschfeld.

On 30 October 2015 we turned 150 and to mark that milestone we produced a publication called ‘He Pou Herenga Tangata, He Pou Herenga Whenua, He Pou Whare Kōrero – 150 Years of the Māori Land Court’ Our publication provides a detailed history of the origins of the Native Land Court and looks at the role of the Court over its 150 year history.
Most ML plans will have spatial capture of the boundaries and marks etc. Most of our blocks are ML plans. Most blocks are fully surveyed although there are still some blocks where only a digital survey has been completed.
