In July 2026, the Māori Land Court released an updated list of successors identified in relation to the Hāwea/Wānaka Substitute SILNA Block. The substitute block is being provided through the Ngāi Tahu Treaty Settlement.
Extending the eligibility of occupation orders will enable more people who whakapapa to land to occupy and build on their land interest.

The Court has now directed that a hui of the descendants be called as follows: • To discuss and consider setting the land aside as a Māori Reservation, including: o a reservation name and purpose o for whom reservation may be set aside o trustees (meeting may elect trustees if a reservation is decided); • The Court has appointed an independent facilitator for the hui.
