Legislative changes affecting incorporations Effective from Waitangi Day, 6 February 2021 Register of interest and annual declaration Māori incorporations must establish and maintain an interests register for the Māori land held by the incorporation.
Generally, members have a three-year term and can stand for re-election at the incorporation’s annual general meeting (AGM). Māori incorporations are governed by the Māori Incorporations Constitution Regulations 1994 and run independently of the normal court processes that apply to trusts, but do provide annual reports to the Court.

If the whenua is held within a Māori incorporation and a member of the PCA declines an offer to sell or transfer incorporation shares, the incorporation can buy those land shares.
These changes include making it easier for landowners to establish Māori incorporations, and provisions for removing a trustee or a member of a committee of management of an incorporation have been updated.
