Through further research I have been able to understand that interests previously held by my grandparents and great-grandparents had been compulsorily acquired by the Māori Trustee, taken for public works or sold. Of the lands that remain we have been able to use those as a basis for increasing the cohesiveness amongst our generation and they are a focal point for discussion at whānau hui.
Changes also strengthen the protections for Māori land. For example, when whenua is
changed from Māori customary land to Māori freehold land, the interests of the owners
will not be individualised.

This application form has been modified specifically for use in determining the successors for South Island Landless Natives
(SILNA) Lands in accordance with Part 15 of the Ngāi Tahu Deed of Settlement.

was a complicated searchfor alternatives from
around 1859-1862. In August 1862, the colonial
government, led by Alfred Domett, brought
a new Native Lands Bill before the House of
Representatives, which was enacted as the Native
Lands Act 1862.
