WHAT IS THIS FORM FOR?
This practice note applies to the appointment, engagement and payment of the fees of
any lawyer1 per ss 70(3), 98(3) and 98(9)(c) of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act1993 (Act) out
of the Māori Land Court Special Aid Fund (Special Aid Fund).

Since the passing of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act1993, our role is to:
promote the retention of Māori land in the hands of its owners, whānau and hapū
facilitate the occupation, development and use of Māori land
ensure that decisions made about Māori land are fair and balanced taking into account the needs of all the owners and their beneficiaries.
Trustees are appointed by the Māori Land Court under the jurisdiction set out in s 222 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act1993. In making appointments two crucial criteria must be considered.
