land from Māori by deeds of purchase, and by
this means about two-thirds of the country had
passed into the hands of the government before
the Native Land Court was established.
It was a reciprocation of both
positive and negative deeds from one person to another. Utu was a means of seeking, maintaining and
restoring harmony and balance in Māori society and relationships.
