Series types Early minute book series dealt with land investigations for a regional location. As the role of the Department (Native and Māori Affairs) evolved, the type of minute books also evolved to include a wider range of activities.

The legislation that enables us to perform this role is Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, which recognises the importance of Māori land as taonga-tuku-iho – of special significance to Māori passed down through generations.
Today, many Māori landowners continue to act as collective kaitiaki of their whenua, to honour and protect their land as taonga-tuku-iho. Our role as Te Kooti Whenua Māori is to facilitate and promote the retention and use of Māori land, and support whānau to occupy, develop and use their whenua.
