Māori land trusts Māori land trusts are used to manage whenua owned by multiple people.
We were established to convert customary Māori land into titles which could be acquired, initially by the colonial government and later by individual settlers.
That provides a great deal of protection because the land cannot be sold or gifted away. Nor can the land be taken by way of an agreement under the Public Works Act 1981.
